By the end of the fifth day, they had sold more than 3,200 Bibles. And more than 50 per cent of the buyers are below the age of 25, belonging to diverse religions. “It is amazing that there seems to be a revival of religiosity among today's youngsters. The response this year has been better than ever,” says Isaac J Shaw, executive director of DBI. Shaw has been holding the sale of Bibles at the Book Fair since 1987 without miss.
The Bibles at the stall are available in 20 languages and are being sold at a special rate of Rs 50. Besides, there are more than 1,000 titles and CDs available on the life and preaching of Jesus at discounted rates.
Aastha Arora, a teenage buyer of Bible says the book will be a great read for her. “We read Bibles in our school but I want to read the whole story instead of just the important passages,” she says. For some, they bought it out of pure curiosity. “I just wanted to now what is in it,” says Sndeep Gujral, another buyer.
The stall is also holding an “Inscribe the Bible and win free gift” in Hindi and English in which a participant has to write a verse from the Bible.
The English writing section has already completed inscribing a whole Bible and has started another round now. “We held the same event in 2006 but only 700 people had inscribed in seven days. This time within four days, the number has crossed a thousand,” says Abvan Pamen, a team leader of the organisation.
