Onion growers to get Rs 50 aid per quintal

Mumbai, March 8 In a bid to support onion farmers reeling under dipping prices, the state has decided to provide them an aid of Rs 50 per quintal at a total cost of Rs 80 crore.

Prices of onion skyrocketed due to its shortage in 2007, hovering in the range of Rs 1,500-Rs 1,800 per quintal in November 2007. However, in December prices fell to Rs 488 per quintal, dipping further in January to Rs 255 and Rs 216 in February 2008. In January and February 2008, 111.29 lakh quintal of onion has entered the markets and in March, another 50 quintal is expected. For the month of March the state is anticipating 50 lakh quintal more. In another sop to the farmers, the Cabinet decided to provide aid to those who have lost their crop to natural calamities such as unseasonal rains and hailstorm. The state had witnessed unseasonal rains, storms and hailstorm in the month of May 2006, June 2006, October 2006, March 2007, April-May-June 2007. The damage to crops was 50 per cent.
