Online lottery fraud: Nigerian arrested

Cracking down on online lottery fraud, the city police on Thursday arrested a Nigerian national who allegedly cheated a Kondhwa resident to the tune of Rs 8.5 lakh.

The accused has been identified as Jackson Mandela Habel Joseph (36), a native of Nigeria, currently residing at Dahisar in Mumbai. Ubed Urab Ansari (36) of Hill Mist Garden, Kondhwa Khurd, who was cheated, had lodged a police complaint in this case.

According to the police, Ansari received an email on December 16, 2008 from one Dr Habel Joseph congratulating him on winning 10 lakh pounds in a lucky draw at England. He directed Ansari to deposit some money in a bank account to claim the money. Thinking that the deal was genuine, Ansari deposited Rs 8.5 lakh in the accounts at Bank of Baroda and ICICI bank branches in Jaipur and Rajasthan. When he did not receive any money, Ansari called Habel who asked him to deposit Rs 9.11 lakh more for cash clearance and other services. This time, Ansari approached the Kondhwa police. As per the instructions of the police, Ansari told Habel he was willing to pay the amount but would give it personally in Pune. Habel sent a man to Pune to collect the money from Ansari. On Thursday, Ansari finalised a five star hotel on the Bund Garden road to hand over the cash.

Accordingly, a police team laid a trap and nabbed Jackson while he was accepting the money from Ansari.
