The party wanted Porbandar MLA Arjun Modhwadia and Bhiloda MLA Anil Joshiara to raise the two issues through adjournment separately. As Speaker Ashok Bhatt refused the demand, the Opposition MLAs walked out amid sloganeering condemning the government.
In a press statement, CLP chief spokesperson Siddharth Patel said that the high-handed attitude of the government showed its lack of sensitivity toward the issues that had been haunting the conscience of the people of this state for the last one-month.
Expressing his dissatisfaction after the walkout, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Shaktisinh Gohil, said that the Speaker had strangulated an opportunity to express solidarity with the people of the state.
"The Patan gangrape episode and the Polo forest firing have given rise to angst among the people of north Gujarat. We wanted to share that and the Speaker should have joined us. Instead, he found ways to thwart our efforts. We were even ready to let the Budget be presented on a mere assurance that a zero hour discussion be held on the issues. Even this was rejected," Gohil informed.
The Opposition had sought an adjournment motion under rule 108 of the Assembly on both the issues. Later the CLP made two resolutions, one each on the two issues. While the party has demanded that investigations in the Patan gangrape be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in case of the Polo forest police firing, it wants a judicial probe.
Earlier, a march of tribal supporters led by the Congress was dispersed by the Gandhinagar police leading to the detention of Congress MLAs Anil Joshiara (Bhiloda), Ashwin Kotwal (Khedbrahma), and tribal leader B D Damor. In all, the police made over 50 arrests from the rally site.
