Opposition leader Chirag Zaveri said in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation’s (VMC) general board meeting recently that the present system of collecting water charges ignores class divisions in the society.
“Ideally, the charges should be based on the percentage of house tax paid and not a fixed amount. For example, as per the present system, each resident is supposed to pay a fixed amount of Rs 850. But the fact remains that charges are equal for those who live in 10,000 square feet houses and those who live in 500 to 1,000 square feet houses. It is totally wrong and the charges should be collected on percentage basis,” Zaveri said.
Similarly, for those who live in apartments, each occupant is supposed to pay Rs 850 when water connections are limited.
“Why should 10 families pay for water supply given to only four families? These are the points that the present body is ignoring and we are pointing out the flaws,” he said.
Zaveri added that the opposition had raised the issue during the budget session in the general body meeting, but nobody considered it important and nothing changed.
