Kolkata On a day when the issue of job reservation for Muslims rocked the streets of Kolkata, the government faced flak from the Muslim community when only 11 Muslim youths successfully made it to the rolls of Kolkata Police as sergeants and sub-inspectors among 506 posts. State’s Minister for Minority Development Abdus Sattar shot off a letter to CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee while Muslim organisations pointed fingers at the state government. “It is very unfortunate that only 11 out of 506 are Muslims and there are no women. I have written to our CM about this. I am all for job reservation for Muslims,” said Sattar but added that earlier, 15 per cent of the constables who got in were Muslims.

A number of representatives from Muslim organisations, including the All India Milli Council, met Sattar after results were announced last week for the examination for the posts of sergeants and sub-inspectors in Kolkata police. It was seen that only five Muslims out of the 222 general seats were successful in passing out as sergeants and six Muslims out of 116 general seats were successful in passing out as sub-inspectors. “It is just two per cent of the jobs that went to the Muslims. Nearly 104 passed in the written exam but they failed in the interview. We wrote to the CM and met state minority development minister,” said Shahood Alam, general secretary of West Bengal Milli Council.
