Kolkata Four persons, including the military chief of outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup (KYKL) of Manipur and three other women commanders, were arrested from Matigara in Siliguri sub-division in Darjeeling district on Sunday night.

The district police nabbed them while they were trying to enter Nepal through Matigara in Siliguri.

“Ningthoujam Tomba alias Koireng, the military chief of KYKL, was arrested along with three of his associates last night. We have started interrogating him. He is one of the top wanted terrorists in Manipur. We have informed the Manipur police and a team would be coming soon,” said Darjeeling SP D P Singh.

The 57-year-old Koireng is originally a resident of East Imphal in Manipur. “Yesterday, late in the evening, we received a tip-off from the intelligence agencies that Koireng and his aides would be crossing the border. We thoroughly quizzed them before arresting them. We had information about him from Manipur police,” said K L Tamta, IG (North Bengal).

During his interrogation, Koireng has revealed he had been residing in a village in Kurseong sub-division in Darjeeling for the last five-six years. Koireng, a science graduate, joined the outfit to achieve “sovereignty for Manipur”, said a police source.

Tamta said among the three women arrested are Koireng’s cousin and adopted daughter.

According to police records, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), meaning “the organisation to save the revolutionary movement in Manipur”, was formed in January 1994 following merger of the Oken faction of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the Meiraba faction of People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and the Ibo Pishak faction of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP). But a group broke away from it last year to form a military wing, which is known as Miyamgi Yawol Lanmee (KYKL military defence force).
