Surat A 22-year-old jobless diamond polisher committed suicide by jumping into the Tapi on Sunday. The body was later recovered from the causeway late at night.

According to the police, Laxman Gujjar, a resident of Panchvati Society from Singhanpore crossroads in Surat, was earlier working as a diamond polisher at a private firm on Ved Road. He was jobless for the last four months.

The police said Laxman was facing a financial crisis and had even tried for jobs at different places, but in vain. He was in depression for the last few days.

On Sunday, Laxman left his house and went to the causeway at Singhapore and jumped into the Tapi. Some of the passers-by immediately informed the fire brigade officials.

After a two-hour search, the body was recovered and handed over to the Chowk Bazaar police, who sent it to the New Civil Hospital for postmortem.

Chowk Bazaar Inspector B L Vavaiya said: “We have found that the deceased was a jobless diamond polisher and was staying with his elder brother, Sitaram Gujjar, and his family. After Diwali, Sitaram left Surat and went to his native place in Maharashtra, while Laxman stayed back and tried for a job..”

He added: “Before committing suicide, Laxman made a call to his friend Rajesh, also a resident of Singhanpore and informed him that this was the last time he was talking to him.”

He added: “We have informed Laxman’s relatives back home in Maharashtra to take charge of the body.”
