Ludhiana, February 13 Outreach workers appointed by the Punjab AIDS Control Society have been waiting in vain for their salaries for over a month and a half.

The society drew flak today in an important meeting of the Punjab Networking of Positive People Society held under the presidentship of Jagjit Singh Maan.

It was demanded in the meeting that the salaries of the outreach workers, appointed in the month of December, be released at the earliest.

Addressing the gathering, Jagjit Singh Maan said, “These workers are already HIV positive and spend money to reach their respective job places everyday. They need their own money to meet the demands of their families also.”

In a letter of request to the Chairman of Punjab Networking of Positive People Ludhiana, Geeta Rawat, an outreach worker said, “I was appointed as an outreach worker on December 24. After joining the job, I had to spend lot of money to reach the office daily despite being sick. I stopped sending my children to school to save money to reach office. In view of my health, I am now unable to attend to my duty. I request the Punjab Networking of Positive People, a non-government organisation to help me in getting my salary from Punjab AIDS Control Society. This will also help my family.”

While demanding that the salaries of the outreach workers be released at the earliest, Maan demanded the Punjab AIDS Control Society to start a mobile van service to create awareness on AIDS and also send the required material at ICTC centres.
