Chandigah If everything goes as planned, around 1,500 LPG-run auto-rickshaws and 1,200 AC and non-AC cabs will be running in the tricity soon, making travelling easier for residents and tourists. A draft plan to streamline the public transport service between Chandigarh, Panch-kula and Mohali was prepared on Monday and is expected to be implemented soon.

In the meeting attended by the State Transport Commissioner, Haryana, the Director Transport, UT, and the General Manager of Haryana Roadways, it was agreed upon to countersign the AC and non-AC taxis running in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali. The number of vehicles to run between Chandigarh and Panchkula and Chandigarh and Mohali was fixed at 200 for AC taxis and 200 for non-AC taxis each. It was decided that the permits of vehicles not more than five years old would be countersigned by the states and the UT for the purpose. Permits countersigned prior to this agreement, if any, however, will remain in use till their validity period expires.

Emphasis was on special colour coding of these common taxis. These will be white in colour with the insignia of open hand printed on them, so that they can be distinguished from other taxis. It was also decided to have a common fare structure for the AC and non-AC taxis that will run in the tricity.

A decision was taken to countersign the permits of auto-rickshaws running between Chandigarh and Panchkula. It was also decided that the auto-rickshaws running on LPG/CNG/battery would be fitted with electronic fare meters. The maximum number of auto-rickshaws to be countersigned by the respective states and the UT was fixed at 500 each.

Auto-rickshaws more than 10 years old will not be countersigned. To increase the frequency of buses, it was further deliberated upon to constitute a sub-committee for identifying the corridors for starting a public transport service between Panchkula and Chandigarh. UT Secretary (Transport) Ram Niwas said: “It was a long pending demand of the residents of the tricity. The fares for these taxis and autos will be finalised soon, after which the service will take off.”
