Jigna Gandhi (20), a third year student of Faculty of Arts felt heavy in the head and suddenly dropped down unconscious while she was coming out of the auditorium. Not just her, but over 32 students at the auditorium had a similar experience and were immediately brought to the SSG hospital.

Nirali Shah, a student with the Arts Faculty said: “I was there in the auditorium but came out even before the programme ended. My friend and I collapsed all of a sudden. We felt comfortable inside.”

The incident occurred at 5.30 pm when the programme was about to end. While some of the students fainted at the back stage, many in the audience felt dizzy.

All the students brought to the SSG Hospital complained of headache and breathlessness. The doctors feel that low oxygen level inside the auditorium probably led to the incident. Also, show of excitement by jumping and shouting further exhausted the students.

“There were over 1,000 students in the locked room for a long time and lighting up of over 108 diyas at the same time further decreased the oxygen level. All students were immediately given oxygen and administered saline doses. They are all in good shape now,” said V P Hathila, superintendent at the SSG Hospital.
