The LJS is planning to take over the private pumping stations running in various societies and housing schemes, besides increasing water tax.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the Secretary, LJS, Raghuvendra Kumar said the proposal for the same is expected to be finalised in the board meeting slated for later this month.
“It is an important step that has to be taken to improve the water supply in the city. Illegal connections are not only hampering our regular supply but also affecting revenue collection,” he said.
“More often, people complain about dirty water supply, leakages or low pressure of water. All these problems are due to unauthorised connections,” he added. The latest move is expected to smoothen the maintenance work, which would thereby improve the water supply. He also promised to make the registration process simple for new household connections or commercial connections. “We’ll make the process of getting new connections easy so that people don’t have to run from pillar to post for such a minor thing. The LJS will also recover development charges from these people for converting unauthorised connections to regular ones,” he said. The regularisation will increase the revenue collection of the LJS by nearly 20 percent, according to an official. “The revenue collected by the LJS from the water tax and other charges is around Rs 35 crores at present. This will significantly increase if the coverage area is also increased,” an official of the LJS said. According to officials, there are around three lakh valid water connections in the city. Besides, many of the private colonies in trans-Gomti area have their own tube wells and pumps that are illegal.
