Mumbai As many as 9,40,011 children were administered polio drops in the Pulse Polio Immunization Programme by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday. The civic body targeted a total of 13,13,370 children in the city on the National Immunization Day (NID).

Dr Mangala Gomare, in charge of city’s immunisation drive, said: “The response this month was 71 per cent, which is slightly better than previous round (December NID round scored 70 per cent) on the first day. Usually, in NID rounds the response is good because of the television ads that are constantly aired besides our routine awareness activities.”

The best response was from Chembur area with 82 per cent coverage, while in most other wards the usual coverage was up to 64 to 70 per cent with Kurla recording only 62 percent.

Volunteers were deployed inside trains, at railway stations, bus stands, gardens, beaches and amusements parks to administer polio drops to children. Children in Mumbai and in states apart from UP and Bihar were administered trivalent vaccine.

“Unlike last year, this year’s NID rounds were conducted a month early with the first in December as we were anticipating Lok Sabha elections dates clashing with the pulse polio programme,” said Dr Gomare.
