Chandigarh Coming to the rescue of a woman who alleged that her car was damaged during transportation, the District Consumer Forum has directed the packing company to pay Rs 26,000 as compensation.

The company, Advance Movers and Packers in Sector 45, has also been asked to pay Rs 89,000 towards losses

incurred for the damage.

Prerna Kapoor, a resident of Sector 47, booked a consignment for sending household goods and the car from Bangalore to Chandigarh for Rs 32,500 through the company and paid Rs 20,000 in advance.

She was later told that the car met with an accident near Rohtak while being taken from Bangalore to Chandigarh via Gurgaon, a route never chosen or requested by her. Later, the complainant got the car in a damaged condition, leaving her with no choice but to sell it off at a much cheaper price. She averred that the car was deliberately taken by road instead of sending it through lorry as promised and also as per the terms of the insurance.

The company stated that the car was transported through road only after Gurgaon.

The complainant was duly intimated and she took delivery of the damaged car with the assurance that she will get the insurance claim, the company reply read.

The forum said ordinarily and under the conditions of transportation, the car should have been transported in a lorry covered with tarpaulin as mentioned in the insurance policy.
