Painting for over three years now, Falguni's design work and art sustain each other. “In art and design certain elements are common,” she clarifies. “However, design is for a user and a specific reason; whereas a piece of art is an individualistic expression. I need the duality of both to constantly keep me inspired,” she explains.
Having studied at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Falguni was always artistically inclined. She along with her husband Satish started Design Directions Pvt. Ltd. in 1988, in Pune. During the 18 years of running this company, her priorities and thoughts were mostly channelled into design work for customers, designing brand strategy, capital equipment, medical and electronic products, package design - both structural and graphics websites and sales collaterals for various companies.
Recalling her first experience with painting she talks about the origin of her art. “One fine day I started painting. I really don't know why and where the desire came from. I worked on my art, along side my design profession,” she tells. A mercurial personality, her temperamental mind allowed her to slip in and out of the two roles quite comfortably.
With the precision in language that her communication career bestows upon her, she propounds, “I think that every person has a hidden reservoir of talent. Many people don't explore this side. Life is like a forest, deep and mysterious. Many strange and surprising things happen here. Some are obvious and some are not.” The things that have happened to her were either quite obvious or she is exceptionally clear-sighted.
About her collection ‘Forest Stories’, a panoply of paintings with bold strokes and raw lines which display its creator as someone who is comfortable with bluntness. “My paintings are not inspired from nature, but from people. I am depicting my thoughts about people through nature. And of course I like nature,” she says.
She also specialises in animation and has represented India for the design and animation of an UNICEF project. She will soon exhibit her work at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi.
(Her solo exhibition titled 'Forest stories' will be displayed at Art2Day Gallery, Solapur highway, camp from February 4 to 9.)
