Panchkula, February 24 The Panchkula police seem to be tightening the noose on the violators of the traffic rules in the city with the number of challans having drastically gone up as compared to that of the last year.

From a mere 1,802 challans in the month of January-February in 2007, the number of challans this year for the month of January till date is 6,778. Though people are largely being challaned for over speeding and driving without seat belt, the Panchkula police is also checking on people indulging in drunk driving.

“Unfortunately, unlike Chandigarh, there has been no culture of challans since long in Panchkula. It is for this reason that car drivers who wear a seat belt in Chandigarh happen to remove the same the moment they enter Panchkula. But now Panchkula police is all set to strictly deal with all violators of traffic rules,” said ASP Manish Chaudhary, also in-charge of traffic in the city.

While the number of challans for the month of January and February last year were 1,802, generating a revenue of Rs 5,30,000, this year the number has gone up to 6,778 from January till date with the generated revenue of Rs 12,70,000.

Traffic inspector said, “The number of challans for violations like not wearing the seat belt and overspeeding has been maximum to around 30 and 50 daily. Also, with the coming of an interceptor, we are now able to catch hold of the violators easily”.

Singh also added that it has been since last two months ever since big nakas are being put at the major intersections of the city. “It is on a rotational basis that the nakas are put on one of the five major intersections like, 17/18 roundabout, Red Bishop lightpoint, Sector 1, Tank Chowk, Sector 11/15 roundabout and Amartex Chowk,” Singh said.
