Surat, January 2 A well-organised gang of thieves that was involved in 17 shop break-ins in Udhna Rander, Pandesara and Limbayat areas of the city was nabbed by the police on Tuesday night. Police have recovered two Maruti cars and two motorcycles along with readymade garments from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off, Pandesara police set up vigil at Ranchod nagar area in Pandesara on Tuesday night. On suspicion, they stopped a car and began a routine check. The driver and the three passengers in the car failed to come up with satisfactory answers, following which they were detained.

During interrogation, the four identified themselves as thieves who had committed thefts in shops in Rander, Pandesara, Udhna and Limbayat areas. The miscreants have been identified as Kalusingh Tank, Jagbirsingh Tank, residents of Harinagar slum, and Pritamsingh Ranghuveersingh and Harnamsingh Bavri, both residents of Prabhunagar slums in Udhna.

The gang confessed to having committed 17 thefts in the city. They sold the stolen goods and spent money in liquor parties, police said.

Pandesara police inspector D M Brahmabhatt said, the gang members were masters in the art of cracking shutter locks, and they generally targeted readymade garments shops, grocery shops and mobile shops. "Along with the shop break-ins they are also experts in stealing Maruti cars and motorcycles. They generally used a car while going out on their mission, so that nobody ever suspected them. After committing the crime, they would divide the spoils among themselves and sell them off to different people. We have recovered two cars, which they had stolen from the Rander area along with mobile phones and readymade garments. We expect to glean more information from them during their remand," said Brahmabhatt.
