Kolkata The election of the vice-chancellor of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (BCKV) took a new turn today with the faction of teachers against the CPM-supported teachers’ body nominating a candidate for the post of the V-C.

According to the university regulations, the Governor and Chancellor of the university will nominate the vice-chancellor from the three-member panel recommended by the executive council.

It is for the first time in the history of the agricultural university that groups opposing the CPM-backed BCKV Teachers Association have been able to nominate their own member.

The three-member panel, which has been sent to the Chancellor, comprises the present Dean of Research S K Sanyal; D Konar, former state director of agriculture and Puranjan Das, Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

According to sources in the university, the first two candidates have been nominated by the teachers association close to the CPM. The third candidate has managed to figure in the panel due to the efforts of a section of the opposition.

The opposition teachers alleged that despite acting Vice-Chancellor Ranajit Kumar Samanta tendering his resignation on October 11, the elections for the executive council was held on December 14 after the term of former Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi expired on December 13.

“The CPM-backed teachers association had already nominated the name of three teachers. But we had around six people in the executive council who backed our candidate and for the first time we had a non-party backed candidate,” said Biswajit Mondal, a member of the university executive council.
