Harpreet, a resident of Chandigarh, who runs a shop in the market, said the groups were carrying swords and other sharp-edged weapons. As a few youths tried to escape from the spot, another, whose face was covered, pulled out a gun and fired at them, Harpreet told the police.
The miscreants fled the spot by the time the police reached, Mataur Station House Officer (SHO) Sub-Inspector Devinder Singh told Newsline.
“Since they left nothing behind, no cause of provocation or loss in the clash has yet been ascertained,” said Mohali DSP (City-I) Gursharan Singh, adding that further investigation was underway to find more details of the incident. Though the miscreants fled the spot, panic prevailed in the market as shoppers were seen moving away. A case under Sections 336, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC was lodged on the statement of Harpreet Singh against the unknown assailants, said investigation officer Assistant Sub-Inspector Narinder Singh, who was also checking the records of local hospitals to gather information about victims in the firing and rioting incident, if any, admitted anywhere.
