Implementing a Senate decision, membership to the library has been provided to 50 individuals who are not a part of PU.

Talking to Newsline, PU librarian Dr V K Anand said: “We have got a good response for the seats available for outsiders. At the moment membership is limited to 50 outsiders, but the number may be increased in future.” According to him, mobile jammers have been a great success as students no longer keep moving in and out of the library to attend calls on their phones.

The authorities had earlier met with resentment from the students for installing mobile jammers in the library.

Dr Anand said a suggestion had been submitted to Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti to put up mobile jammers in the examination halls too. “Even if students manage to smuggle in mobile phones, they will not be able to use them,” added Anand.

In 2008, the library had launched its website www.library.puchd.ac.in. The website connects all departments, giving the students access to approximately 7 lakh journals.

An upgraded security system has also been installed in the library. Besides, drop boxes have been placed that enable students to return the book any hour.

The machine will work round the clock and automatically generate a receipt the moment a book is dropped.

The next step involves installation of drop gates. No student will be able to leave the premises with a book without getting it properly issued by the authority concerned. In such an eventuality, the drop gates will automatically close.
