Chandigarh There may be another addition soon to the list of facilities for students of Panjab University (PU). The PU plans to convert the old coal depot adjacent to the Sector-14 market into a shopping complex. The complex will house a dedicated food court in line with the one near the PGI that had started operations recently.

Dean Students Welfare Prof Naval Kishore said that an architect with PU, Harpreet Singh has prepared the blueprint of the complex. Work on the four-storey building will start in a couple of weeks, he said.

The complex will not only cater to the people on campus but will also be accessible to outsiders.

Kishore added, “Union Minster for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal has also donated Rs 10 lakh for the renovation of the Sector-14 market and Governor of Haryana, A R Kidwai has donated Rs 11 lakh for the complex.”

Once the complex is completed, it will be connected to the already existing market through a passage. Those whose booths will fall on the way will be allotted a shop each in the new complex.

The shops will be leased out on auction and the contracts will be given accordingly.

The students are overwhelmed with the decision. President of PU Council, Sahil Nanda, said, “The students are happy and they will now have more options to choose from.”
