Pune Even as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been waxing eloquent about the rehabilitation of slum dwellers in the city through various projects, commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi went a step further and actually stayed overnight in a slum to get a taste of life there.

After presenting a copy of the annual budget to reporters on Thursday night, Pardeshi headed straight for his scheduled overnight stay at a slum in Yerwada. He ate the food prepared by a slum dweller, interacted with the slum residents, slept at a slum dweller’s house. Corporator Haneef Shaikh had also accompanied him. The women discussed their source of income and day-to-day problems with him. On Friday, Pardeshi woke up at six am, had his bath there and headed straight to the PMC headquarters as the annual budget was going to be presented.

Before going to the Yerwada slum, he also paid a visit to PMC’s Gharte project where children of homeless parents are educated. After this, the commissioner visited the hutments in Don Bosco School ward, represented by NCP corporator Bapu Karne, and discussed the Valmiki Ambedkar slum rehabilitation scheme with the slum dwellers. Later, he went to Parnakuti ward (19) represented by Shaikh.
