Ludhiana Parents of students of MGM Public School today held a protest and blocked traffic at Dugri Bridge. They were protesting the school’s move to raise the fees. The parents today raised slogans against the school management and demanded that the fee hike be called off. It was around 1 pm when the agitating parents blocked traffic near Sidhwan Canal for about an hour.

Charanjit Singh, father of a student, said: “The school authorities had increased the fees and we are protesting the move.”

Citing their reasons for the protest, another parent said: “Both the annual and the monthly charges have been increased. The annual charges have been doubled from this year onwards.”

The parents had come to know about the move on February 25, when they had gone to the school to receive the annual result of their wards. The parents earlier held a meeting with Gajjan Singh, Director of the school management, and requested the management to reconsider the fee hike.

Gajjan Singh, meanwhile, said: “We were about to reach a compromise, but the parents asked us to give an undertaking that the school would not increase the fee in the next ten years. This was not acceptable and thus, we decided not to reconsider the matter.”

He further alleged that some parents also acted like “ruffians” and damaged school property. Singh said: “The parents broke windowpanes of the school building, punctured my car, broke the locks and also threatened me and the staff. I had to call the police. I will meet the SSP tomorrow and file an FIR registered against those parents who behaved in an irresponsible manner. As I know those who indulged in such activities, I will name them in the FIR.”
