Parkers’ paradise at civic HQ

Pune The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regularly holds Mobility Committee meetings with the traffic police to improve the traffic scenario. But the civic body seem oblivious of the growing nuisance right in front of its Shivajinagar headquarters.

Swanky four-wheelers, owned either by the corporators or their party workers, are parked outside the PMC main building in Shivajinagar for hours together every day, creating problems for commuters and pedestrians.

The vehicles are parked in two rows, right below the “No Parking” sign.

However, to avoid action by the traffic cops or the PMC, the drivers keep sitting inside. This is despite the fact that the PMC has a parking complex on its main building premises, which the party workers and visitors prefer not to use. They park the vehicles on the road instead, say civic activists who frequent the PMC headquarters.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil said, “The traffic police take action against vehicles parked in the No Parking zone. However, since the vehicles stand just outside the PMC building, we expect the civic body to take action first, as it is happening right in front of their eyes.”

He, however, promised that the police would act against such traffic violators.

When told about the problem, PMC additional city engineer Shrinivas Bonala said it was the responsibility of the traffic police. “It is the prerogative of the traffic police to take action against erring vehicles.”

Some activists said that the traffic police and the PMC could use jammers to lock the vehicles parked illegally and tow them to the ward offices if the owner did not approach the civic staff for two hours. The owner should be asked to pay Rs 500 as the charges for towing the vehicle to the ward offices, they said.
