Ludhiana The city traffic department’s proposal to ban parking on certain stretches between Fatimanagar and Kedarinagar has stirred a hornet’s nest with residents undertaking a signature campaign against the move.

In order to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, the department had proposed — a ban on parking from Fatimanagar to Navyug Mandal, no-parking zone from Hotel Sai Sagar, Apang Kalyan Sanstha to Jambhulkar chowk and Jagtap chowk and unilateral parking at certain spots on the stretch till Kedarinagar.

As the traffic branch has invited suggestions and objections to the proposal from residents of the area till February 5, several of them have undertaken a signature campaign opposing the move.

Dr C Sanghvi, a resident has written to Manoj Patil, DCP (Traffic), about the problems that will occur if a no-parking zone is created on the stretch. “There are three hospitals here that will be deprived of visiting faculty. Moreover, hawkers will occupy the vacant space,’’ he said adding that most of the employees of commercial malls on the stretch hogged road space by parking outside the establishments instead of the basement parking. He, along with several residents, has urged the traffic branch to continue the P1/P2 or unilateral parking instead of setting up no parking zones.
