It was a 650-strong audience who sat through the musical production ‘Hims n Hers’ on Valentine’s Day Eve braving the cold breezy night at Hotel Ashoka. The play sounds like a candy floss love story, however, it turned out to be a grimly romantic story about gender conflict, narrated through the voice of a eunuch. “That’s why the title of the production is Hims and hers. What the play is saying is Adam; the caretaker of all creatures in the world is the perfect man—an image of god himself. Or is the eunuch a complete identity in himself and a reflection of God,” said Nitin Tewari, who wrote and directed the musical.

The one and a half hour play begins with a chauvinist man who meets a feminist woman, on the insistence of their parents, who want them to marry. What follows is a battle of nail-biting quandary to see a well-educated “chauvinist” sparring with the girl. The drama is heightened by original soundtracks such as Do I need them and Can we be one again and the refreshing title track Hims and hers. While the couple quibbles, the narrator, a eunuch hands over the dialogue to God himself who unravels the problem and the motivations of Adam, after he was created. The myth gradually starts breaking when need for a companion arises in Adam’s heart and he asks God for a gift which would change the course of future completely. Along came Eve.
