I love period movies and refuse to believe that period movies are passé. I consider myself a student of history and I think that period movies serve a lot of purposes. They disseminate historical facts. I have had a strong connection with them, having acted in a couple of period serials. It is a pain to see some of the period films not getting enough audience. But there have been a couple of period films like the recent 'Elizabeth' that was publicly and critically acclaimed. Ashutosh Gowariker was my first co-actor and I am curious about how the film is going to turn out.

Though the invented debate of viability of parallel cinema versus that of commercial cinema still exists, nobody yet has a readymade formula for the success of a movie. Various permutations and combinations lead to a film being appreciated by an audience. There is a subtle difference between an entertaining film and cinematic experience itself. What appeals to me more is films that possess a sublime intellect, films that serve a better function and purpose and also the fact that they should not be demeaning nor should they be degenerating. At the end of the day, though, what matters is how the audience reacts to it.
Ajinkya Deo, Actor
Period films promote love for the matrubhoomi. People going to the theatres to let time pass by is a sad situation for meaningful films. This leads to producers thinking about just business statistics and good historical movies left without any financial backing. But I believe that period movies still have an accountable audience who appreciate something that is done for the country. The wide approbation for films like Rang De Basanti and Chak De India stands as evidence.

There are no conditions that apply to a film being successful. This isn't a racecourse where you bet on the horse that you think will win. If the film is well made, then it will definitely attract the audience that it deserves. Criteria such as the genre of the movie do not matter. It is only the calibre of the movie that counts. History stands witness with films like Mughal-E-Azam and Pakeezah having been appreciated through the generations.
