Yasmeen Abrar, a member of the NCW said, “It was a shameful incident and required quick action from the government. Unfortunately, the government has not taken adequate measures. We had demanded a fast-track CBI investigation into the matter, but the government has assigned the case to CID (Crime). The investigations in the case have also been rather slow.”
The four member committee comprising of Abrar, Maya Dave, senior Congress leader, Kusum Rathore of the Sarvodaya Youth Federation, and city-based advocate Amee Yajnik observed that actions such as replacement of male teachers by females, was not enough to deal with the 'spectre of fear' that loomed large in the institute.
Abrar said, “The six accused have been arrested, but no concrete action has been taken against them. Education Department officials had assured us that action would be taken against the accused, after a charge sheet is filed. We want their degrees to be revoked.”
The NCW has also asked the state government to respond to allegations that no action was taken against complaints of sexual harassment from the PTC since 2001. The NCW has also reiterated its demand for the socio-economic rehabilitation of the victim.
The NCW has also received memorandums from the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation , Sahiyar, a women’s organisation and the Gujarat Congress urging the commission to take up the cause of sexual harassment of dalits and tribals in the state.
