Condemning the incident, People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) said it was a serious breach of trust between the teachers and students, which has come as a major embarrassment for Gujarat. PUCL's Prof J S Bandukwala and others called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Members of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) burnt effigies of the six teachers who have allegedly gang-raped a first-year student in Patan's Primary Teachers' Course (PTC) College. “We applaud the girls who protested on Monday in Patan against the incident, and if the need arises, we are ready to go there to support them. The teachers should not take students for granted,” said Rutvij Joshi of NSUI.
Organisations like Olakh, Jansangharsh Manch and the National Socialist Movement organised a protest movement in Sayajigunj area in the evening and demanded the resignation of Anandi Patel. “We want her to resign from all her posts, even as the Patan MLA, as the shameful incident has taken place in her constituency. It is the responsibility of the state to protect women at all places,” said Dr Maya Valecha, one of the activists.
City-based organisation Sahiyar, which submitted a memorandum to the Vadodara District Collector, called for a strict implementation of the Supreme Court guidelines against sexual harassment in all educational institutions. While mulling over taking out a signature campaign and public protest programmes, Trupti Shah of Sahiyar said that in addition to action against the management, teachers and even principal, the phone numbers of all members of the sexual harassment committee as per the SC guidelines in each institute should be made available to all students.
All Indian Manav Sangharsh Committee members said that such incidents in context of the state government's Beti Bachao Abhiyaan were shameful and only raised the issue of increasing security concerns for women in Gujarat.
Meanwhile, the incident is likely to become a political issue, what with the Vadodara unit of the Congress planning a sit in protest on Wednesday at Gandhi Nagargruh.
