Kolkata Accusing the hospital authorities of negligence, relatives of a patient ransacked portions of the Institute of Child Health, a private hospital in the city, on Friday.

One-and-a-half-year old Shifa Parween, a resident of Gora Chand Road, was admitted to the hospital on February 3 with high fever and acute respiratory tract infection. According to the hospital authorities, Parween had been recovering well but the problem began when the child’s relatives accused the institute of medical negligence and created a ruckus there.

The situation was, however, brought under control after intervention by the police.

A minor argument between Parween’s mother and the attending nurse snowballed into a scuffle. Later, patient’s relatives along with some local youths began ransacking the administrative office of the hospital, said a hospital staff.

“Hospital employees misbehaved with us. A nurse even took off the intravenous fluid channel saying the patient did not require it any more,” said Masroon Rashid, a relative of the patient.

When contacted, the administrative officer of the Institute of Child Health said: “The allegations made by the patient’s relatives are unjustified. There was a miscommunication between the nurse and the patient’s family. The intravenous fluid channel needs to be changed from time to time but when the patient saw the nurse taking it out they thought otherwise. The child was recovering well and the relatives unnecessarily created a ruckus at the hospital.”

The child has been discharged from the hospital and no complaint has been lodged so far.
