‘Patriarchy to blame for female foeticide in country’

Chandigarh, February 6 The Geetanjali helpline of MCM DAV College organised a senstisisation programme on female foeticide: the disappearing girl child on Wednesday.

The event was organised in collaboration with the State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh. The seminar was aimed at creating awareness about new legalisations such as the PNDT Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.

The event was aimed at sentisizing students to work towards eradicating the social evil. Asha Hooda, vice-president, Haryana State Council for Child Welfare was the chief guest at the function. A documentary titled ‘uska aana’, which projected the resilience of a woman in saving her unborn girl child from being killed.

Presentations on the issue were made by eminent personalities in the field of medicine, law and academics. Nishtha Jaiswal, professor at the PU Department of Laws, talked about the socio-legal angles attached to the issue.

Kamini Tayal,a lecturer at the Sociology department of MCM college blamed the patriarchal system for the prevalence of the female feoticide in the region.

A panel discussion was also held. The students, faculty members and members of various NGO groups also participated in the discussion.

Asha Hooda demanded a collective effort by society to eliminate the evil.’ Women were worshipped in this country. It is our responsibility to fight against female foeticide.’
