On the basis of his comprehensive studies, Dr B.S. Ghai, a former professor and head of the Department of Genetics of the university, put forward his point of view that Darwin’s theory of evolution was probably incorrect. He revealed with data that almost all the mutations occurring in nature were deleterious.
“These are not being removed from the populations. Instead of improvement, nature is reducing the fitness of all organisms including man. This is the main cause of extinction of the species”, he said.
Dr Ghai said that even the established breeds of many domestic animals including cattle and poultry faced the threat of extinction. Conservation of the existing variability was a big challenge for the crop and animal breeders, he stressed.
He said that his findings which would come out in the shape of his book next month would also be of interest to those who, on the basis of their religious teachings, were unwilling to accept that man evolved from monkey.
The seminar was presided over by Dr G.S. Khush, an internationally-acclaimed geneticist and breeder credited with green revolution through development of high- yielding rice varieties. He appreciated Dr Ghai’s efforts of putting up a different perspective to the evolution theory. Dr M.S. Kang, vice-chancellor, was the chief guest on the occasion.
