Ludhiana Ornamental fish culture is an upcoming venture and holds great potential in India, but till now about 85% of the trade is restricted to only north-eastern states (West Bengal, Manipur) and rest 15% is from southern states (Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu), said Dr Kamaldeeep Kaur, Dean, College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

She said Punjab was completely dependent on Maharashtra, Chennai and West Bengal for the seed as well as brooders of ornamental fish. As the environment of Punjab is well suited for culture as well as breeding of these fish, there is a lot of scope for its trade in the state.

Therefore, to educate the urban as well rural community regarding upcoming and lucrative enterprise of ornamental fish culture, College of Fisheries, GADVASU, is going to organise a three-day training programme from January 27 to 29. Under a project funded by Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh, Dr Asha Dhawan, co-ordinator of the training programme, said that the extensive training would be imparted to the participants right from fabrication of aquarium, its maintenance, fish species to be cultured, their breeding, disease diagnosis and treatment etc.

It will help people, especially women and youth of rural and urban areas in developing their skill, which they can adopt as a small-scale enterprise. All the aspirants can contact the College of Fisheries, GADVASU, on any working day.
