Ludhiana The Punjab Agricultural University Teachers' Association (PAUTA) will go to polls on March 25. An announcement to this effect was made by returning officer Dr Ranjit Singh Dhillon yesterday.

Owing to feud between PAUTA factions, the current PAUTA executive could not complete its second term. The union goes to polls almost four months before the completion of its term in October. This situation arose after the rival faction of the teachers’ union refused to accept Dr G S Saroa as its president. Dr Saroa was announced president by PAUTA general secretary Mukesh Siag after the elected president Dr M S Mahal offered to step down due to his differences with the general secretary.

The general house meeting of the teachers union held on March 6 witnessed story meeting which culminated in dissolution of the PAUTA .

Dr Ranjit Singh said, "The elections will be held in case there is no unanimity in electing a new PUATA executive." When asked whether PAUTA factions have accepted the date, Dr Dhillon said, "The date has been selected keeping in mind the guidelines laid down by the PAUTA constitution." The last date for filing of nominations is March 18 while March 20 as been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of names.

Meanwhile, Dr A S Joshi whose faction is led by Dr K S Sangha said, "After the resignation of Dr Mahal, it is vice-president Dr B S Sohal who automatically becomes the president. However, Siag and his supporters violated the PAUTA constitution."

Dr Joshi added, "We are prepared for the elections and next week we will hold a meeting to finalise our candidates and strategy."
