Chandigarh/Patiala In response to the call given by Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (PFUCTO), teachers working in five universities, 54 government colleges and 170 non-government colleges ceased work on Friday and held rallies on campuses. PFUCTO is demanding implementation of MHRD notification on revised pay scales issued on December 31, 2008, under the Sixth Central Pay Commission. General Secretary of PFUCTO, Dr Jagwant Singh, said that this time the MHRD notification hardly gives room for any changes. “So, to avail Central assistance, the notification is required to be adopted in toto,” he said. He added that the government should understand that this is the only category under the Central Pay Commission which has not received the benefit of pay revision. He said that they will intensify their agitation from Monday and plan to hold rallies at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Bhatinda.

The teachers of Punjabi University, Patiala, organised a mass dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, from 11 am to 1 pm on Friday.

The teachers have demanded the immediate implementation of the new UGC pay scales. The teachers said it was surprising that the Punjab government is reluctant to implement the new scales even though 80 per cent of the burden of the new pay scales has to be shared by the Central government.

“Moreover, the state government will gain a sufficient amount in the form of income tax from the centre,” said the teachers.

The speakers cautioned the state government that if the government failed to implement the new scales in time, the agitation will be intensified. The PFUCTO has already resolved to start a 72-hour bandh from March 3, 2009.

Others senior varsity teachers including J A Khan, Joga Singh, R S Ghuman, Jaswinder Singh, Jaswinder Singh Brar and Kulwinder Singh also addressed the teachers.
