The plan, recently formulated by Chidambaram to assemble an integrated mechanism for fighting terrorism, was implemented on February 20, sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs said. The concerned ministries have been informed regarding all new requirements and everything sanctioned to the Delhi Police as part of the plan will be in place by April 15.

Chidambaram, who took over as Home Minister following the Mumbai terror attacks, visited the Delhi Police Headquarters on January 5 and held a two-hour long meeting with Commissioner of Police Y S Dadwal, Lieutenant-Governor Tejindra Khanna and senior officers over the state of policing in New Delhi.

Under the 100-day plan, the Delhi Police has been sanctioned five new Indian Reserve Police battalions, and 288 new vehicles for the newly formed districts under it. Two-hundred new motorcycles have also been sanctioned for traffic management.

To assist the police, the Ministry of Home Affairs has cleared a plan to install CCTV cameras in 58 major markets in the Capital.

The pilot project of installing these cameras has been reportedly given to Electronic Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) and the installation process is already underway at the Vasant Vihar Complex and Ghazipur Chowk.

All 28 border check posts in Delhi will also be covered by CCTV cameras.

It has also been decided that the whole security of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation should be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and for that, all 3,266 required posts in the CISF will be filled soon. Initially, only 1,633 CISF personnel were sanctioned for the DMRC.

“All these things will be in place by April 15 as part of the 100-day plan,” an official said.

The Delhi Police itself upgraded its facilities recently. Major markets like Karol Bagh and Sarojini Nagar already have CCTV cameras in place. Official sources said all bus terminals and railways stations will also be covered by CCTV cameras soon.
