The State Pollution Control Board (PCB) on Tuesday urged heads of the city’s Durga puja committees to use environment-friendly Low Emission Deficiency (LED) lights in pandals. It has called a meeting on August 14, where the committees will be given a demonstration on the use of such lights. “This is a sensitisation drive; the puja panels will not be compelled to follow it. But it would be better if they do so because unlike normal lights, these consume electricity and emit carbon dioxide at a much lower rate. Also, the chance of people getting electrocuted by the wiring of such lights is almost nil,” said PCB Law Officer Biswajeet Mukherjee.
