Pune Stringent action would be taken against illegal hawkers operating in areas under the jurisdiction of the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB), board chief executive officer S K Sardana said on Friday.

Earlier, a group of vendors at Kumbharwadi Market, near Pool Gate, allegedly manhandled and prevented personnel of the PCB's Nuisance Prevention Squad (NPS) from seizing their merchandise. Officer on special duty Jarnail Singh was injured in the fracas that broke out after the squad tried to seize handcarts and other goods from the area.

According to Singh, “We were patrolling at around 3.30 pm and came across some illegal carts in the Kumbharwadi Market. As we started confiscating them, a group of around 50-100 vendors surrounded our squad and manhandled us, preventing us from doing our duty.”

“The board will not tolerate such incidents. Manhandling personnel while they were carrying out their duty is inexcusable. The matter will be looked into," Sardana said.
