PCR personnel arrest car thief after chase

Chandigarh, February 27 Displaying prompt action and coordination, 10 Police Control Room (PCR) personnel in three vehicles managed to stop a thief fleeing with a stolen vehicle and arrested him on Tuesday night.

The PCR received a complaint from Navin Mittal, a Sector 21D resident, saying his white colour Maruti car (UP-12-B-7755) had been stolen from his residence. A car theft message was flashed by the PCR to all its units (vehicles) stationed in various parts of the city. Soon, the alert PCR personnel of the Staff Trauma Highway Vehicle spotted the stolen car at Labour Chowk (Sector 20-21-32-33 roundabout).

However, before they could intercept the stolen car, it took a U-turn and started travelling towards the Piccadily roundabout. The police kept on passing information to other PCRs about the location of the stolen car and continued to remain on its tail. Within a few minutes, two more PCR vehicles reached Dakshin Marg.

While one PCR vehicle was stationed at Ram Darbar turn, another one was kept at Industrial Area Phase-I, II, Sector 29-30 roundabout. As soon as the stolen car reached near Industrial Area Phase-I, II, Sector 29-30 roundabout, the thief was arrested by the police.

The thief, identified as Varinder Singh, is a resident of Sangrur district. The police have handed him over to the police station concerned and a case has been registered.

Meanwhile, the PCR officials were awarded first class certificates with cash rewards by IGP S K Jain. Those awarded included S-I Gurdial Singh, driver of the PCR vehicle Home Guard Sarabjit Singh, HGV Jaga Singh, Head Constable Waryam Singh, ASI Yagaywant Singh, Constable Rashpal Singh, HGV Rakesh Kumar, Head Constable Satya Prakash, Constable Shiv Narain and pharmacist Vivek Sharma, who was present in the vehicle that spotted the stolen car.
