The members of 200-odd Muslim families carried on with their daily chores while SRP personnel were deployed to avert any untoward incident on the sixth anniversary of the violence.
Rashid Khan, a villager, said, “There is no trouble in the village and it is quite peaceful nowadays as cases are pending in the court. Even the possible sites where the bodies could have been disposed are not revealed as there is no security.” He added that of the around 250 families, nearly 200 have returned.
Meanwhile, many residents of the nearby town turned up at the court premise to have a glimpse of social activist and member of Citizens for Justice and Peace, Teesta Setalvad. While the police remained on their toes until the hearing got over around 4.30 pm, many people stayed in the compound waiting for the order to be announced.
However, no one came forward to talk about the accused. Of the around 95 accused chargesheeted, most of them got anticipatory bails on March 1, 2002. And around five of them
belonging to Ode had moved to the US.
Earlier in the morning, the Umreth police made sure that those having political connections remain at bay, following apprehension of troubles with Teesta in the town.
