Chandigarh, February 7 People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) officials claimed that the unhygienic conditions in which birds are kept was responsible for the outbreak of bird flu. A PETA team had conducted a five-year undercover investigation on the conditions at various ‘broiler chicken’ and ‘layer hen’ farms across the country.

The findings of the probe which culminated in April 2007 were presented at a press conference on Thursday.

The team had also assessed husbandry, slaughter methods and transport facilities in the poultry and egg supply chain. It also described the potential health hazards to humans. Recommendations were also made for changes to be introduced in the system.

A graphic undercover video footage was released showing crowded and unhygienic conditions in chicken and egg factory farms.

The report was supported by health experts at UN. PETA manager, N G Jayasimha warned that the unhygienic conditions in poultry farms could lead to a bird flu outbreak in Punjab, if preventive measures are not taken “The industry standards are same for all state farms,” he said.
