Mumbai Departing from the normal practice of naming discoveries after politicians, the Petroleum Ministry on Wednesday christened the Cairn India find in Rajasthan after police officer Tukaram Omble, whose sacrifice led to the capture of terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora named the 25th oil and gas discovery made by Cairn in its Rajasthan block after the late ASI Tukaram Omble at a function in Barmer. “Omble took the bullets from Kasab’s gun, leading to the capture,” Deora said. “We salute his bravery our country can never forget such bravehearts.”

The Sahid Tuka Ram Ombale discovery is the latest discovery and the first exploration well in the 2008-09 exploration programme.
