Although the general body has already approved the proposal for carrying out such need-based recruitments, which will enable PGI to hire world-renowned experts in areas where it is difficult to find senior faculty, some members of the faculty feel this would be detrimental for their professional growth.
“This would curtail the chances of promotion of the existing faculty as the outsiders would have more say in the functioning of the institute. This will undermine the importance of the existing faculty,” said a senior faculty member of the PGI.
Some members also feel such a move would demoralise the faculty members who have served the institute for long. “The move could kill the work culture at the institute and the faculty would feel suffocated. It is like putting aside the experience of the faculty and giving an upper hand to people from abroad. This has never happened at the institute before,” said another senior faculty.
A K Gupta, Deputy Director Administration, PGI, had earlier told Newsline that the institute was preparing guidelines to hire experts both from India and abroad on a short-term basis in super specialties where experts are difficult to find under the standard recruitment process.
