A complicated surgery, Lobar Lung transplantation is a procedure in which a patient’s lungs are partially or totally replaced by lungs of a donor. While lung transplants carry certain associated risks, they can also extend life expectancy and enhance the quality of life for near-end stage patients of pulmonary complications.
“Under these transplants, a portion (one half of the single lung) or one lung from a donor can be transplanted in the patient with lung failure to enhance the chances of survival. We are contemplating to start these procedures once we completely shift our services at the Advanced Cardiac Centre (APC),” said Dr Shyam T Singh, head of department, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, PGI.
According to doctors, the procedures would be an integrated effort of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and that of the Thoracic surgery.
“We feel we are equipped with the required infrastructure and manpower. The procedure requires state-of-art operation theatre and special care in case of infections. At the moment, we are trying to assess how many patients could require such a procedure before we actually begin such surgeries here,” added Dr Singh.
