The Gohils say the exhibition is just a part of the documentation of the royal heritage to attract not only the locals but also draw the attention of the state Tourism department, which has been turning a blind eye to the decay of heritage.
Prince Manvendrasinh Gohil of the family says that the government took over many royal buildings after Independence, but never bothered for their upkeep and maintenance.
As such, the family is now, through this photo exhibition, organised to mark Vijaysinh's birth anniversary, documenting the present status of the royal property. Vijaysinh was the last king of Rajpipla before Independence, and was the first Asian to win a derby.
As part of its heritage documentation, the royal family is also taking up cudgels for restoring the Juna Raj Palace, which has been submerged ever since the Kadana Dam has been constructed.
"The Juna Raj Palace is nearly 500 years old. Although it is submerged in water, its architectural importance has not diminished. It lies in the midst of the Kadana dam, embellished with the Bhilwara architectural style of Rajasthan. Due to its beautiful location in the midst of the dam, the palace can attract many tourists if properly maintained," said prince Manvendrasinh Gohil.
He said the family has also submitted a representation to the Rajpipla municipality to reconstruct a statue of Vijaysinh that was vandalised by miscreants a few months ago. The statue is constructed in the middle of the city, but is not properly maintained.
Manvendrasinh also enumerated various other palaces of importance in Rajpipla. "There is the Chhatra Vilas palace, a part of which was demolished. Then there is also a clock made in the 18th century that is lying in the centre of Rajpipla city," he said.
He said the Italian paintings in Vadia Palace are lying in a state of neglect, and the government is not bothered about restoring them. "The Vadia Palace is called the Taj of Gujarat and has paintings which are considered among the rarest art forms in the state. But the Tourism department doesn't seem bothered. In this documentation, we are going to include the present status all these royal mansions in Rajpipla which are on the verge of decrepitude," he said.
