Pune Two goals in two minutes by the Pillay brothers – Vikas and Vinod- helped their team Vikram Pillay Academy beat Mumbai’s Union Bank 2-0 in the final of the Late Shardul Gaikwad hockey tournament being held at the Ammunition Factory hockey ground, Khadki on Sunday.

Vikram Pillay Academy dominated most of the game and thoroughly deserved their victory. They had a good start to the game forcing the opposition keeper Anil Doke to make a double save in the opening few minutes. They applied constant pressure on the opposition goal and kept the keeper busy in the opening 20 minutes. Union Bank then had a good spell where they won two penalty corners in a row. They, however, failed to convert these chances. Vikram Pillay Academy then went on the attack again and won a couple of penalty corners themselves but Doke remained a tough nut to crack and denied the opposition a goal. The half ended goalless. The second half saw more of the same from Vikram Pillay Academy and they had chance to take the lead in the first five minutes of the half. They failed to convert this opportunity but kept on piling the pressure. They were rewarded a few minutes later, when they took the lead through a Vikas Pillay beauty. Pillay cut past a defender drove into the box and reverse hit the ball into the goal. In the very next minute, VPA were awarded a penalty stroke for wrongly obstructing the ball heading goal wards. Vinod Pillay drilled the ball into the top corner and sealed the game for his team. Union Bank launched a late fight back. VPA central defender, Rahul Deokar was instrumental in helping his team keep a clean sheet.
