Mohali/Chandigarh Fiza attempts suicide, out of danger but will be arrested

A day after former Haryana deputy chief minister Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammed disappeared, his second wife Fiza attempted suicide at her residence on Thursday.

The Mohali police booked Fiza on charges of attempt to commit suicide and a case was registered against her at Phase-XI police station.

Jatinder Singh Aulakh, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police, said though her offence is bailable, she would be arrested once declared fit. “She would of course be released subsequently,” he added.

Fiza consumed 25 tablets of alprazolam — an anti-depressant around 11 am. Empty strips of the medicine were recovered from her bedroom, where she had consumed them.

She was physically lifted by one of her relatives and taken to a private clinic, from where she was referred to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 32.

Doctors termed her condition as stable and out of danger. Briefing the media, Dr Jeet Ram Kashyap said: “She herself told us that she had consumed 25 tablets. She was drowsy but conscious on arrival. We have flushed out the toxins but her condition needs monitoring for the next 24 hours.” He added the tablets are considered ‘mild’ and in extremely rare circumstances the overdose proves fatal or even leads to respiratory depression.

Rana Ghuman, a family friend who brought Fiza to the hospital said she was upset since Wednesday. “On way to hospital today morning, she kept saying that her life has no meaning without Chander Mohan,” she said.
