Of 140 students at UBS, only 55 have been placed till now. This despite the fact that UBS is one department where it's never a long wait for students to get placed.
Training and Placement Officer Prof S K Chadha said: “Placements have really gone down this year. We are still expecting two companies which have a demand of around 50 students. It is difficult to say whether we will achieve the 100 per cent placement mark this year.”
Students are, meanwhile, exploring all options. While most students at UIET are planning do go for an MBA, others have decided to go abroad.
Training and Placement Officer, UIET, Dr Gurdeep Singh, said: “Students are going for off campus placements while others are taking up any job coming their way. There are many who have chosen to study further. The final update can be made available only by July but it is certain that not all would get placed.”
Global crisis: Students give IT, finance a miss
BESIDES taking a toll on placements, the global economic recession has also adversely affected students' interest in the field of Information Technology and finance. Experts say students preparing for MBA interviews are likely to opt for fields other than IT and finance.
The current batch of students, who will be joining different B-schools all over the country, are having second thoughts. "I am preparing for my group discussion and personal interview scheduled for March. Till last year, I was keen to pursue my MBA in finance but the current meltdown has set me thinking. I have decided to explore other options like HR and marketing," says Appra Zafarani, a final-year student at UIET, Panjab University. "Finance has lost its sheen due to the current crisis. While some of my friends are still keen on the subject, I am apprehensive. There is no guarantee of placement anywhere," says Kunal, another engineering student. Students seeking complete value of money after pursuing an expensive course and those insecure about placements are ignoring the two fields. "Since I will be taking a bank loan to study MBA, I will definitely like to secure a good package that enables me to repay my loan. If not a blanket ban, at least there is a freeze on jobs in the IT and finance sector. So I have decided to go for marketing," shares Apoorv, a student at PEC.
