Chandigarh Entry tickets and passes would give way to swipe cards with magnetic tapes at the venues of Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches this year as part of enhanced security.

“The system will be similar to the one we witness at the access points of Metro stations. Each valid ticket will have a magnetic strip code, which, when swiped, will give a signal to the master server to open the terminal panel,” said Colonel Arvinder Singh, Vice-President, Operations, Kings’ XI Punjab.

The decision has been taken in view of the chaos that prevailed during the last IPL matches besides security concerns, he added.

Access Control Card Readers (ACCRs) will be installed at all points at the PCA Stadium and so the entry will be automated, Col Singh said, adding that the process of installation will start within a week by Skidata Company.

While Access Control Card Readers are expected to be installed at all venues hosting IPL matches across India, Chandigarh is the first station. This, because the PCA is relatively more organised, has good facilities and marked entry and exit gates, said Col Singh.

The system will also make the whole IPL experience more fun. “For starters, guards will not waste time at entry points and then the excess staff, if need be, will help you find your way to the seat,” informs Col Singh, adding that for security Nicholas Steyn has been roped in by the IPL. This, besides the local security force that will search vehicles and people at three entry points.

Also expected for the first time this IPL are cheerleaders with a Punjabi touch, says Col Singh, as he shows us the plush line-up of merchandise of Kings’ XI Punjab. “We are targeting the youth this time and so the fashion line-up along with co-sponsorship of Jhankar, the annual fest of Panjab University,” he says, adding that to make IPL more appealing, tickets will be made more accessible online on website kings11punjab.com and debit cards too will be accepted.

Enjoy the game!
