Players begin attempt to qualify

It was a busy day at the Siri Fort Sports Complex badminton courts today, as the battle for main draw places in the 1st Pramod Mahajan All India Senior Ranking tournament got underway. The meet, which had been organised under the aegis of the Delhi Badminton Association, has a prize money of Rs nine lakhs.

In the women’s singles category, P Jyotsna survived a comeback bid from Rimi Hazarika to advance to the quarter finals after a tough battle, 21-14, 16-21, 21-5.

Neha Pandit, Sheetal, Parssa Naqvi, Bibari Basumatari , Anjali Kalita, N Sikki Reddy & Manali Sinha also made it to quarter finals. In women’s doubles, the duos of Gayatri Kochak and Chitralekha and N Sikky Reddy & P Jyotsna moved into the pre-quarter finals.

Men’s singles: Manish Rawat beat Ashish Sharma 17-21, 21-19, 21-19; Abhinav Prakash beat Sahani Sankar 21-14, 21-10; SDS Krishna beat Deepak Talan 21-14, 21-10; B Kiran Kumar beat Girish Sharma 21-4, 21-9; Jibi Verghese beat Avijit Chakraborty 21-5, 21-0; Hemant Duggal beat Rishabh 21-9, 21-9; Mohit Kamat beat Amit Sharma 21-11, 21-14; Arup Baidya beat Vijay 21-9, 21-7; P Vinay Kumar Reddy beat Jatin Ummat 21-10, 21-9.
